Special Advisor, Mobile Ad and Content Platforms

In 2001, five years before the iPhone, Derek founded one of the world’s first companies that recognized the power of mobile devices for connecting consumers, brands and mass media.

Alongside brother Geoffrey, Derek started The Hyperfactory, an agency that creates strategies and builds mobile applications, sites and consumer experiences for brands like Coca Cola, Kraft and Intel. It is the most awarded mobile agency globally. The Hyperfactory was listed by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the Top 100 Brightest Ideas of 2010 and one of Brandweek’s 10 Biggest Ideas of 2008. Meredith Corporation (NYSE:MDP) acquired the Company in 2010.

In 2011, Derek was named to the ‘Silicon Alley 100’ as one of the most influential technology people in New York. He was also recognized as a World Class New Zealander and Sir Peter Blake Trust Leader. In 2010, Derek was named New Zealand Herald Business Leader of the Year and in 2009, the Ernst & Young ‘Young Entrepreneur’ of the Year in New Zealand.

Currently, Derek is an angel investor, co-founder or Director of a number of purpose-driven technology start-ups including Booktrack, BigLittleBang and Snakk Media. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Young Ambassador unit of Opportunity International, one of the world’s largest microfinance organizations; is a Trustee of the Arts Foundation of New Zealand; and is a Founding Advisor to the Association for Promotion of Electric Vehicles of New Zealand.

For 2012, Derek has donated a year of his life to Sir Richard Branson to co-found and lead The B Team to accelerate a movement of global leaders working to catalyse business as a driving force for social, environmental and economic good.

Derek believes business and entrepreneurship are the most powerful and inspiring forces of progress, but in this century where the welfare of people and the planet are at serious risk, they have a far greater responsibility than just short-term financial profit. The B Team is an important catalyst in this journey.
